Covid-19 and Labour Migration: The Women Economics Dynamics

Abstract:

Labour migration is the movement of persons from one State to another or within their own country of residence, for the purpose of employment. Movement across borders is almost impossible for new entrants amidst COVID-19 pandemic, while existing migrants are lockdown. Current realities suggest that women labour migrants are major economic participants in “family migration”; however, they face greater risk of exploitation, trafficking and abuse. Despite these realities, COVID-19 has increased challenges like; vulnerable living and working conditions, labour shortages and job losses. Key recommendations responses include; provision of supports covering legal, cash, in-kind, health and policies to ameliorate their conditions.
