CMS-NAU Celebrates 2022 International Migrants Day in grand-style

 The Center for Migration Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka in collaboration with the Nigeria Immigration Service, Anambra State Command organized a Migration Awareness Workshop to mark the 2022 International Migration day with the theme “MIGRATION ENABLEMENT PROCEDURE”.

The event took place on 13th December,2022, at the Center for Migration Studies (CMS-NAU) Conference Hall and was attended by dignitaries from various works of life including students. It was live streamed for those who could not make it to the Centre. Some of the special guests during the event were The comptroller Nigeria Immigration Service Anambra State command, Ngozi Odikpo, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Ernest Ezeajugh, The Director, National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Person (NAPTIP), Anambra State, Ibadin Judith Chukwu and the state coordinator of Civil Society Network for Migration and Development (CSOnetMADE), Eucheria Onyemobi. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Charles Esimone FAS, FPSN , The Chief Host was represented by Professor Ike Odimegwu, Director Academic Planning, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.  

Other Highlights of the event are:

  1. The  Vice Chancellor in his opening remarks welcomed all the guests on behalf of the University Community and stressed the commitment of the University to ensure that CMS-NAU played a pivotal role in ensuring safe, orderly and regular migration through effective collaboration with other relevant stakeholders 
  2. The Director of the Center for Migration Studies, Professor Tracie Utoh-Ezeajugh put the workshop in perspective by highlighting the need to create adequate sensitization on regular migration procedures.
  3. The  Comptroller Nigeria Immigration Service,  Anambra State command in her speech commended UNIZIK and the Centre for Migration Studies for their efforts in creating awareness on the need for safe, orderly and regular migration. She further explained the procedures involved in obtaining an international passport. According the Comptroller, all the requirements for different passport applications are clearly listed on Nigeria Immigration website www.immigration.gov.ng.
  4. The Chief of Staff to Anambra State Government and former Mayor of London Borough of Brent, Mr. Ernest Ezeajugh, who narrated the struggle faced by irregular migrants in foreign lands to survive and earn a living. He urged the participants to avail themselves of all useful information on how to travel using the right means.

The Director, National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Person (NAPTIP), Anambra State, Ibadin Judith Chukwu in her remarks outlined the efforts made by the organization in promoting awareness on safe mode of migration.

Other stakeholders who spoke at the workshop were the state coordinator of Civil Society Network for Migration and Development (CSOnetMADE), Eucheria Onyemobi and the Deputy Director of the Center for Migration Studies, Dr. Chidozie Nwafor.

The ceremony also featured side attractions from various performing groups and question and answer session was held.
