The Centre for Migration Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (CMS-NAU) in collaboration with The GIZ Centres for Migration and Development Programme (ZME) and the Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment hosted a 5- day Migration Workshop at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, from Monday 7th July to Friday 11th July, 2025.
Program Highlights:
- The program started with a Capacity Building and Train-the-Trainers Workshop for lecturers from different faculties involved in migration research and dissemination.
- The opening ceremony for the Information and One-on-one Counselling Session for Students on Regular Labour and Educational Migration within the Region and to Germany was held on Tuesday, 8th July 2025.
- Counselling sessions on regular labour migration opportunities were provided for 350 students per day. A total of 1,400 students were counselled and equipped with information to make informed choices about labour and educational migration from Tuesday, 8th - Friday, 11th July, 2025.
The joint facilitation team consisted of representatives from GIZ led by Austin Obinna Ezejiofor, Head of Component, Regular and Regional Migration, Nigerian-German Centre for Migration and Development(NGC), Centres for Migration and Development (ZME); Eseosa Okuku, Programme Component Manager Centres for Migration and Development, Nigerian-German Centre for Migration and Development. Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH; the Migrant Resource Centre of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment led by Joan Anih, and the Centre for Migration Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, led by the Director Prof. Tracie Utoh-Ezeajugh.
Programme Outcomes:
- Alignment with CMS-NAU Vision: The program underscores the vision of CMS-NAU, focusing on Education, Research, and Advocacy in migration studies.
- Effective Collaboration: Collaboration with GIZ, MRC, and other partners contributed to the program's success.
- High Student Engagement: A significant number of students (1,400) were counselled, indicating strong interest and engagement.
- Capacity Building: The Train-the-Trainers Workshop enhanced lecturers' capabilities in migration research and dissemination.
